No coincido con todo el post de Mike, pero apoyo la crítica a la religión dominante.
En realidad llegué allí buscando otra cosa. Buscaba qué hacer con un “programador” que literalmente no hace nada. No programa. No escribe documentación. Miento, hace algo, lee Ámbito financiero, habla mucho, acota siempre y no deja trabajar la resto. Pero divago.
Mi error fue buscar por “lazy”. Y ya les cuento porqué. Primero quiero compartir otras joyitas que encontré en la misma búsqueda y fueron las que me llevaron a darme cuenta de mi error.
What do you do with lazy programmers? sonaba prometedor, pero se va por las ramas, incluso la respuesta seleccionada no es lo que estaba buscando. Ojo, tienen razón, uno es programador, y bueno, porque es “lazy”.
Ahí empecé a sospechar que quizás “lazy” no era la palabra adecuada para lo que estaba buscando realmente. ¿Qué estaba buscando? Sigan leyendo.
Otro resultado me hizo dar cuenta que quizás el problema no era algo que tuviera que solucionar la metodología o yo. El problema es de base. Pues, como dijo Fred Brooks, Parnas tenía razón:

Primeras impresiones.

La página no promete mucho, o mejor dicho promete demasiado. Dice "Ve todas las películas y series que quieras vía Internet." pero basta con ir a "Ver títulos" para demostrar lo contrario. No sólo no aparecen películas interesantes, la catalogación es cuanto menos extraña. Seleccionando "Ciencia ficción" nos encontramos con joyitas del género como Babe y Aladdín. ¡Chúpate esa George Lucas!

Usá el buscador, me dirán. Bueno. Busqué lo "primero" que se me ocurrió y no están

Creo que no es descabellado, nada que haya salido en el último año, y son películas taquilleras. ¿Todo ciencia ficción? Puede ser, fue lo que se me ocurrió. Hay tres películas y una serie de Star Trek, después de todo, no es que discriminen el género. Tampoco están Blade Runner ni Hobo with a Shotgun.

Siendo justos, hay cosas que no me esperaba que haya, menos viendo lo que no hay, como, en TV Dramas, "La Lola" y "Ciega a citas" (todo bien con Carolina, pero prefiero volver a ver The Prisoner, que casualmente no está. Para gustos los colores).

Otra maravilla del buscador, es que parece que tiene que devolver resultados sí o sí, buscar Matrix devuelve como tercera opción la novela Mar de amor. La primera opción se salva porque incluye la palabra matrix en la descripción en inglés. Buscar en las descripciones le sube un punto al buscador.

Otra cosa que sube un punto es que están algunas películas que no me hubiera esperado encontrar e incluso me las recomienda, como Das Boot y Donnie Darko, por poner un par de ejemplos. El "sugeridor" de películas parece bastante bueno teniendo en cuenta que "critiqué" sólo unas cien películas.

Pros:

Me recomienda Das Boot, Donnie Darko y Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, que ni sabía que existía pero me encantan las pelis de Kevin Smith.
Reproductor "web".
Carga "rápido" la película usando el reproductor Silverlight ("web"). Entendiendo por rápido que tarda en arrancar lo que tarda un video en YouTube (tengo Speedy 3M, si sirve como dato).

Contras:

El cliente para iPhone/iPod/iPad no está disponible en el App Store de Argentina.
Como reproductores alternativos mencionan sólo Wii y PS3. Estaría bueno que mencionen en qué estado está el soporte de otros dispositivos como el WD TV.
No funciona en Linux, ni con Moonlight ni con la Chrome App...
No funciona la integración con Rotten Tomatoes, devuelve Internal Error...
Cuando cambiás el audio me da la sensación de que vuelve a cargar todo, que no son streams independientes, no así con los subtítulos (ya sé que es un tema tecnológico, lo malo es que no te deja elegir qué idioma querés hasta que no cargó... "Language preferences" parece cambiar sólo el idioma de la interfaz y no tiene opciones audio y subtítulos.)
No cachea en el browser como YouTube, si recargás la página empieza a bajar de cero
Las series parecen muy atrasadas, de Californication tienen dos temporadas de tres, de Mad men las tres primeras.
"Acceso de miembro" WTF!?
De las pelis parece que hay más dobladas que subtituladas y nada de subtítulos en inglés. Las que probé hasta ahora:

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, audio inglés o español, pero subtítulos sólo en portugués
City of God, audio portugués o español, no hay opción de subtítulos
Amelie, audio francés y español, no subtítulos
The Godfather, audio inglés, español y portugués; subtítulos en español y portugués
Das Boot, audio alemán, español y portugués; sin subtítulos
Mad Men S03E13, audio inglés, subtítulos en español y portugués
Californication S02E12, audio portugués y español, sin subtítulos

Parece que portugués es el idioma por defecto para el audio y los subtítulos, cuando está disponible.

También esperaba más del diseño y la funcionalidad de la página, Cuevana y TorrentButler no tienen qué envidiarle.

Resumen, creo que le falta bastante, en películas y en usabilidad. Tal vez se apuraron y salieron con menos, en algunos lugares decían que iba a llegar en diciembre. Leí comentarios sobre la cantidad de películas contando que ha ido en aumento. ¿Pasará algo similar con el soporte y la calidad del servicio? O, tal vez, "es lo que hay".

En este momento sólo puede estar bueno para alguien que mira películas y series en televisión abierta o canales no premium, que justamente es el target que creo que no se da maña para conectar la compu a la tele o que no tiene una PS3 o una Wii, si es que tienen internet.

El eterno bajador de películas y series, que tiene la compu o un reproductor de video conectados a la tele y sonido 5.1, quiere ver el último capítulo de Game of Thrones dos horas después de transmitido en USA, no tres años. Me falta ver si hay alguna película en Netflix que no se consiga por alguna forma de P2P, pero no parece ser el caso. Para competir con eso tendrían que tener los capítulos con menos de una semana de diferencia y al menos el 80% de las películas que aparecen en cualquier "Top XX" de internet. Ahí pago. Ahorrame los pequeños trabajos de configurar el cliente P2P para que se baje la serie, la búsqueda de subtítulos, pero no me hagas esperar tres años, ni uno.

Como nice to have, yo agregaría el soporte para reproductores de video, para no tener que andar conectando y desconectando la notebook de la tele, y mataría que tengan esas pelis maravillosas que ves en el BAFICI y no conseguís por ningún lado, si todavía te acordás cómo se llamaban…

Hace un par de años apareció una supuesta presentación sobre "la cultura" en Netflix Inc., que Scott Berkun diseccionó (e hizo un buen resumen). Netflix.ar no parece de la misma empresa.

Una pena, espero que levante…

The real secret is that it’s the people that matter, not the process! Process is good. Formalizing development methods is good. But if you have the wrong people you will fail, no matter what process you use. Conversely, if you have the right people it doesn’t really matter what process you follow. You will most likely succeed.

It is time we stopped selling processes as the magic bullet. Agile is great, and methodologies like Scrum, TDD and XP can be good facilitators for getting from concept to release. But they do not solve the fundamental problem that a bad team fails no matter what process it uses.

Programming is a human activity, as described in the classic book ‘The Psychology of Computer Programming” by Gerald Weinberg. Therefore the human and psychological aspect needs to be considered when forming a team.

The fact is: Some people don’t work well together no matter how well their skill sets match. Some people are useless within certain processes. And there are also people in the programming field that could be of more use doing something completely different.

We should strive to create the perfect team, not the perfect process.

¿De dónde salió la idea de que la concentración del jabón para la ropa es una virtud más, e importante, del mismo?

Omitiendo los motivos ecológicos y de espacio, si ½ litro del producto A rinden como 1½ litro del B pero cuestan lo mismo ¿dónde me beneficio con la concentración?

He ahí otra mentira, el producto A dice rendir 3 veces (o eso entiendo de la expresión «3×» que ponen por todas partes) y sugiere utilizar 33ml (×3=99ml) cuando la competencia sugiere utilizar 80ml (≈2.42×33ml). ¿Y el 3×? ¿2× les pareció poco y querían un número redondo? 2.5× también sería una mentira.

Antes que nada, la mención final de waterfall no es para hacer apología, ni siquiera es una buena analogía, simplemente para aclarar que la comparación con scrum no es una especie de insulto. Estaba parafraseando java es el cobol de los 90's, claramente java no es cobol y es un poco más popular, trascendió los bancos y las grandes empresas. Pero sigue siendo una buena frase, bastante descriptiva de una realidad del lenguaje.

Algo que me llamó mucho la atención es como parece que hirió susceptibilidades siquiera dar a entender que scrum no es perfecto. Lo que me da a pensar que es peor de lo que creo; digo, si tienen que defenderlo por algo será ¿no? ¿No?

Creo que ni siquiera di un atisbo de qué es lo que me incomoda de toda esta movida de metodologías ágiles, que ni siquiera es algo propio o exclusivo de scrum, ni siquiera de las metodologías ágiles, podría habérmela agarrado casi con cualquier otra cosa (no es mi culpa que scrum esté en el lugar justo en el momento equivocado ;-) ).

Me parece que el fenómeno scrum (agile, whatever) repite una historia que no es nueva, que pareciera que hay quien piensa que scrum viene a solucionar. Scrum tiene muy buenas propuestas para paliar algunas cosas, pero no es la bala de plata que pareciera que quieren comprar algunos. Esta tampoco es mi crítica, dejen en paz mi yugular.

Más ideas sueltas.

Algo que veo que se repite en los proyectos considerados exitosos en la literatura y de conocidos que cuentan su experiencia, es cierta forma de auto-organización, en un sentido amplio, o una adaptación de uno o más modelos, metodologías, conocidos; muy rara vez siguen a rajatabla un modelo preestablecido. Me parece bueno aprender de esto. Sí, las metodologías ágiles proponen algo de esto, y tienen retrospectivas, u otro mecanismo, para corregir y acomodar; pero evidentemente no alcanza. Decir ‹vamos a hacer scrum› no hace que la gente colabore o se vuelva participativa automáticamente, por ejemplo.

Otra cosa que veo mucho, más que casos exitosos al menos, son personas que repiten como loros los mantras ágiles o los principios de scrum, pero nada más. Saben la letra, no la música. Y eso no los detiene, quieren meter scrum hasta para la secretaria, si algo no funciona es porque no hicieron scrum o porque no lo hicieron bien, para alguna definición ad hoc de bien. Extrañamente, esto también, lo de saber la letra no la melodía, es muy común entre las consultoras que venden algún tipo de ayuda para implementar metodologías ágiles. Verdaderos vendedores de fracaso¹.

¿Hay alguna forma de terminar con esto? ¿Qué tiene scrum que despierta tantas pasiones, gente que lo defiende de ataques imaginarios y gente que no sabe de qué habla pero opina (como estoy haciendo yo…)? ¿Es un nuevo partido político? Cuando llega el mundial todos somos técnicos, cuando hablamos de proyectos ¿todos somos managers?

Sería muy bueno que todos seamos un poco más managers, que todos en el grupo sepan de gestión de proyectos, sería más fácil. ¿O no? Tal vez no. Tal vez todos querrían imponer su visión y no habría consenso. Se requiere un buen manager para saber alinear, y alinearse. No alcanza con tocar gestión de oído (ya me repito). ¿Cómo se encuentra un equilibrio entre habilidad y desafío para hacer que el grupo fluya?

¹Esto me recuerda un episodio en el que, hablando de buenas prácticas, preguntaba por qué IBM teniendo los recursos y el potencial no implementaba X práctica o mejoraba Y condición, no recuerdo bien. La respuesta, certera, contundente, y obvia, así como está, IBM da plata.

Scrum es el waterfall de los 90's.

Esto no es un rant contra scrum, intento explicarme por qué falla (sí, falla) y por qué hay que desterrarlo.

No voy a escribir nada nuevo. Joel Spolsky ya escribió sobre las metodologías, de dónde vienen, a dónde van y por qué no funcionan como se espera. Alistair Cockbur nos dijo que el manifiesto ágil no es una idea nueva ni caprichosa y, aún así, se sigue ignorando sistemáticamente su esencia. Alan Shalloway se cuestionó el fracaso de scrum. Y, Ken Schwaber dijo:

I estimate that 75% of those organizations using Scrum will not succeed in getting the benefits that they hope for from it.

Scrum is a very simple framework within which the ‹game› of complex product development is played. Scrum exposes every inadequacy or dysfunction within an organization’s product and system development practices. The intention of Scrum is to make them transparent so the organization can fix them. Unfortunately, many organizations change Scrum to accommodate the inadequacies or dysfunctions instead of solving them.

¿Todo críticas y ninguna propuesta? Sí y no, porque la propuesta es la no metodología (muy zen, vió).

No odio scrum, odio a los que creen que es el mesías, la solución a todos los problemas, la única respuesta, el negocio del siglo, etc.

El camino al infierno está pavimentado de buenas intenciones.

Para los que creen que waterfall está extinto o es inaplicable, hago one-man-waterfall en mi día a día (lo siento Santiago…). Tengo la fortuna de trabajar solo; me llega un pedido para, o se me ocurre, hacer algo, hago un dibujito en un papel o varios papelitos, codeo como loco, hago algunas pruebas y pido que se pase a producción previo paso por QA. El pan de todos los días.

Según imdb aquí se llamó Te amaré por siempre y fue estrenada el 24 de septiembre.

Según rotten tomatoes no es una buena película, más bien mala. No es que confíe ciegamente, pero suele ser una buena guía. También le erraron con The Soloist, que merece al menos un siete por ser técnicamente casi impecable, un gran trabajo de Susannah Grant al que Rula seguramente hará justicia. Aunque acertaron, y mucho, con The Million Dollar Hotel (Ivone, te odio).

Personalmente me gustó mucho. Es mi tipo de película. Eso o me dejó sensible volver a ver I'm a Cyborg, but that's OK (cute++).
